Explore & Discover The City of Gustavus

Welcome to Gustavus where life slows down and you can catch your breath!  As if you’ve gone back in time, you’ll experience congenial people,  a gentler pace, and a place where you can rediscover yourself while exploring and discovering Gustavus.

How much time do you need in Gustavus? That all depends on how much you want to explore. 

Along with whale watching, kayaking and fishing, discover a myriad of other activities you may enjoy in the City of Gustavus, just nine miles from the Glacier Bay National Park.

Rent a car http://gustavusak.com/buds-rent-a-car-sales, bike or hike to journey down the dirt track roads as they meander through wildlands, meadows and temperate rainforests. Hidden treasures are spread out, take your time to discover them.

In no particular order of preference, this list simply highlights some of the many activities you may enjoy. 

Remember to bring your camera and binoculars everywhere you go! 

 

  • Glacier sand beaches
  • Views of the Fairweather mountains
  • Local Art galleries

  • Nagoon Berry Trail 2.2 miles http://gustavusak.com/biking-and-hiking/ near the City Library and school with kids play area
  • The Crane Flats are well known to view the Sandhill cranes during their migration times. The Crane flats are not too far from the Annie Mae Lodge.  http://gustavusak.com/annie-mae-lodge  stop in there and enjoy their views.
  • The Hydro Trail with magnificent views of Icy Straight, the beach and 360 degrees of majestic mountains. This is a long up hill trail, be sure to bring something to collect berry’s in during the huckleberry, blueberry, black current and salmon berry time. This trail is not too far from the Bear Track Inn, http://gustavusak.com/bear-track-inn be sure to stop in to enjoy a cup of tea and maybe reserve yourself to dine there during your stay. 
  • Airplane Crash site and trail, if you are an aviation person or not, you may find this story and site of interest. The story of the plane crash can be found on a plaque at the local cemetery. The plane crash is not too far from Glacier Bay Country Inn http://gustavusak.com/glacier-bay-country-inn stop in there and ask for a tour. 
  • The cemetery also has cultural history of Gustavus

  • Fields of wild sweet delicious strawberries at strawberry time – free to pick as many as you can eat
  • The airport trails
  • Forests of botanicals 
  • Streams and rivers with wildlife galore
  • Fields of Lupins and Fireweeds
  • The Community Gardens
