Gustavus is home to 450 people, and rests on land that rises more than an inch each year, rebounding from the immense weight of glacial ice that covered the area just 250 years ago. Wildlife and wildflowers are abundant, as are: fishing, whale watching, kayaking, biking, art galleries and hiking. For an eagle’s eye view of the community visit the Gustavus Visitors Association web site www.gustavusak.com and find detailed information on planning your visit to our town, including the day cruise in Glacier Bay, accommodations, and getting here from around SE Alaska.

Be aware that there are currently no vehicle friendly campgrounds or services for recreational vehicles in Gustavus or Glacier Bay National Park. In fact, Gustavus has only two main roads that meet at ‘4-Corners,’ with less than 20 miles of paved roads.

Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve is headquartered in Bartlett Cove 9 miles by paved road from the main Gustavus dock. With its spectacular glaciers and abundance of marine wildlife, Glacier Bay National Park is the crown jewel in the itinerary of many travelers to Alaska. Within Glacier Bay, 11 tidewater glaciers spill out of the mountains and dot the sea with icebergs of all shapes, sizes and shades of blue, turning the 3.3 million- acre park into an icy wilderness.

Bartlett Cove is the site of a walk-in only campground, a large commercial lodge, restaurant and bar, kayak rentals and tours, and hiking trails. It is also the starting point for a 40-mile day cruise to see the glaciers in Glacier Bay, offered in the Summer only. Please read the National Park Service ferry visitor information notice regarding limited vehicle service and backcountry permit information. http://www.nps.gov/glba/planyourvisit/ak-state-ferry-to-gustavus.htm
