Gustavus 3-Day Centennial Celebration Event

In celebration of 100 years since the first settlers arrived in 1914 on the Salmon River shores of Strawberry Point, (renamed Gustavus), the Gustavus Historical Archives & Antiquities will sponsor a 3-day event—June 27, 28, and 29th billed as “the biggest party Gustavus has ever seen”.

Friday evening, June 27, will feature a reception and dedication of the new Monument Building at the cemetery, the unveiling of the memorial for the 1957 plane crash, and the ringing of the tower bell 100 times.

Saturday, June 28, a re-enactment of the settlers Salmon River landing and a cannon will signal the start of an all day schedule of activities for young and old alike. There will be live music, gold panning, plenty of food, pony and wagon rides, non-stop old fashioned fun and games, and lumberjack log rolling at slack tide.

The Post Office will set up an on site temporary philatelic station to stamp mail with a special 1 day only pictorial postmark that commemorates the Strawberry Point/Gustavus centennial event.

Sunday, June 29 will begin with a sourdough pancake feed at the centrally located historic Gustavus Inn. Owned by the Lesh family, the Gustavus Inn is one of Southeast Alaska’s oldest homesteads still in operation today—homesteaded in the late 1920’s and serving as an inn since the 1950’s. In the afternoon there will be special VIP tours of some of Strawberry Points original homestead sites.

Sunday evening will cap off the 3-day celebration with a stage production at the local gym. There are several local air charters, Alaska Airline jet service, and a special event ferry schedule to accommodate travelers to and from Gustavus.

The AMHS ferry will depart Juneau Saturday June 28 at 7 A.M. for Gustavus and departs Gustavus Sunday June 29 at 12:15 P.M. for Juneau arrival 4:30 P.M.

It is advised that any overnight reservations be made as early as possible. Contact the Gustavus Visitors Association at for further assistance with accommodation options.

All proceeds from the Centennial Event benefit the local non-profit Gustavus Historical Archives & Antiquities.

The Gateway to Glacier Bay, Gustavus offers a microcosm of all the natural beauty of Alaska. Gustavus is not too big -- no industry interfering with the wilderness, no influx of cruise travelers, no string of souvenir shops -- and not too small. Lodgings cater to personal tastes and are available in a range of prices and a variety of styles. Many of our restaurants feature local seafood and produce fresh from the garden.
