Transportation
Most people travel to Gustavus by a short jet, bush plane, or ferry ride from Juneau, Alaska's capital. An Alaska Airlines jet services our modern airport during the summer. We are located in Alaska's southeast "panhandle"--a stretch of protected coastline that offers the best of Alaska and America to visitors from around the world. Kayak, charter fishing and whalewatching trips to the south of Gustavus offer unparalleled chances to explore the Tongass National Forest, America's largest and wildest. To the north lies Glacier Bay National Park , home to the greatest concentration of tidewater glaciers in the world and the most popular destination of visitors to Gustavus.
By Jet: Alaska Airlines make a daily roundtrip from Juneau in the afternoon. This flight connects north to Anchorage and south to Seattle. Alaska Airlines is the only jet service to southeast Alaska.
During daylight hours, charter and scheduled air taxis operate to Gustavus from Juneau and other communities in Southeast Alaska. Flight seeing, nature tour drop-offs and pick-ups in remote areas are available, as are scheduled flights to small communities in the northern panhandle.
A “triangle tour” that includes Skagway/Haines or Sitka, Juneau and Gustavus is a great way to save money and time. Travelers may book a seat on an existing flight or charter the whole plane for parties of four to six.
Local: taxi, car rental, bike and walking will get you around our small system of roads (20 miles). The drive to the national park from the airport is 9 miles. Lodgings are spread throughout Gustavus, about 5 miles square, with the approach to the beach, river and airport locating most services and our city park. Numerous hiking trails are accessible to the public and the paved flat road is bike paradise. An area map is available locally for your personal explorations.
In the summer, small charter boats arrive at Gustavus Dock. (The dock is loading only, and heavy tackle is necessary for anchoring nearby. A new dock is scheduled to be completed in the Fall of 2010 which will provide for larger boats and the Alaska Marine Highway ferry. Planned is a ramp and expanded private boat docking facilites, although space will still be loading only. Salmon River is tidal and has a small boat harbor and ramp for unloading freight and launching private craft. A City permit is required for boat launching in the Salmon River.
Private boats seek better anchorage in Bartlett Cove in Glacier Bay National Park. Park Regulations limit the number of boats entering Glacier Bay, to protect the humpback whale habitat. Permits are required for boaters between June 1 and August 31, and may be obtained from the National Park Service (907-697-2268).

Doug's first trip to Alaska was in 1968. He moved to Alaska in 1974, and began commercial fishing with his own boat in 1977. Doug has lived in Gustavus since 1978. With over 20 years as a full-time commercial salmon fisherman and bottom fish long-liner, Doug is now “semi retired” from the commercial fishing industry.
In 1996 Doug got a Coast Guard license to carry passengers for hire, and started doing water taxi work in Icy Strait, the outside coast, and Glacier Bay. In 1997 he added fresh water fly fishing, and boat ecotours, providing excellent photographic opportunities for whales, sea otters, seals and sea lions, birds, and perhaps a bear, wolf, or moose along the beach.
Doug recieved a certificate of completion for an 80-hour Wilderness First Responder course, and is competent in a canoe or kayak. Over 30 years of living, working, and playing on the ocean, streams, and in the wilderness of Southeast Alaska have given him extensive first-hand knowledge of this beautiful area. |
