Doug's first trip to Alaska was in 1968. He moved to Alaska in 1974, and began commercial fishing with his own boat in 1977. Doug has lived in Gustavus since 1978. With over 20 years as a full-time commercial salmon fisherman and bottom fish long-liner, Doug is now “semi retired” from the commercial fishing industry. In 1996 Doug got a Coast Guard license to carry passengers for hire, and started doing water taxi work in Icy Strait, the outside coast, and Glacier Bay. In 1997 he added fresh water fly fishing, and boat ecotours, providing excellent photographic opportunities for whales, sea otters, seals and sea lions, birds, and perhaps a bear, wolf, or moose along the beach. Doug recieved a certificate of completion for an 80-hour Wilderness First Responder course, and is competent in a canoe or kayak. Over 30 years of living, working, and playing on the ocean, streams, and in the wilderness of Southeast Alaska have given him extensive first-hand knowledge of this beautiful area.
